We offer free inspection of stained glass church windows within the area to determine if any maintenance or repair is needed. Timely examination and care of stained glass windows will preserve them. Lack of attention can lead to further damage. We do not suggest work on windows unless the windows need work. A written report on the condition of the windows and a set of recommendations is provided along with an estimate of costs.
We do total releading, memorial plate copying, painting, firing and framing. Included in all of our work is the careful cleaning of the glass. We will repair or restore an individual window or an entire church. Windows are either repaired on site or brought to the studio for work.
Restoration includes removing the window from the frame, making and numbering a cartoon of the window, then numbering the glass pieces to match the cartoon. The old lead is removed and each piece of glass is cleaned. New pieces are cut from matching glass to replace cracked or broken glass. The window is releaded with new lead and each joint is soldered. Grout is applied, then whiting, and the window "sits" for a period of time to allow drying. The glass is then cleaned, patina applied if desired, and additional support bars are installed if needed. The window is placed in the frame and glazed into place.
